So there’s a film out based on a successful kid’s book series about a boy who is unaware of his parent’s true nature, and subsequently unaware of his destiny. His name? Well, it’s not Harry.
Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief comes to the big screen from the hugely popular Percy Jackson & the Olympians book series, but we know what he’s going to face – a million comparisons between him and a certain H. Potter. Well, we’ll be bandwagon jumpers and make it one million and one – here’s how Percy and Harry stack up.
Age
Percy: 12
Harry: 11 (in The Philosopher’s Stone)
Winner: We’ve got to give it to (slightly less) young Percy here.
Name
Percy: We’re sorry to any Percys out there, but Percy just isn’t the most heroic of names.
Harry: There’s nothing wrong with a solid, working class name like Harry.
Winner: Potter gets the points.
Number of Books
Percy: 5
Harry: 7
Winner: 5 is a pretty good number, but it doesn’t beat lucky 7.
Home
Percy: Camp Half-Blood (near Long Island, New York)
Harry: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (somewhere in Scotland)
Winner: Ooh, this is a toughy, but we think that the pace of New York just edges ahead of the rugged Scottish woods.
Parents
Percy: Poseidon: the Greek God of the Sea; and his mother, Sally.
Harry: James, a wizard; and Lily, also a wizard.
Winner: Sorry Harry, but Percy’s got a God for a dad.
Powers
Percy: Heightened reflexes; increased physical strength; natural swordsman (with a magic sword); can move, shoot, breathe in, and control water. Shall we go on.
Harry: Increasingly adept at magic, potentially the most powerful wizard ever seen.
Winner: Another tough choice, but Harry might just win this thanks to his thousands of spells.
Actor
Percy: Logan Lerman from 3:10 to Yuma, Gamer and The Butterfly Effect
Harry: Daniel Radcliffe from not much before Potter came along. Oh, there was The Tailor of Panama.
Winner: While it’s tempting to give this to mega-star Radcliffe, Lerman actually has a bigger body of work than Daniel did before landing the role of a lifetime.
Stars
Percy: Alongside Lerman there’s Uma Thurman, Sean Bean, Steve Coogan, Ray Winstone, Rosario Dawson and Pierce Brosnan
Harry: Alongside Radcliffe there’s Robbie Coltrane, Maggie Smith, Richard Harris, Alan Rickman, John Hurt and John Cleese
Winner: Percy might have slightly more star power, but we have to give it to Harry’s Brit-centric cast.
Director
Percy: Chris Columbus, director of Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire and I Love You, Beth Cooper.
Harry: Chris Columbus, director of Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire and I Love You, Beth Cooper.
Winner: Er, this is obviously a draw.
The Winner
Percy: 4.5
Harry: 4.5
A draw? Seriously? Well, we can’t sit on the fence; we’ll award this to Harry Potter, but we’ll also warn him not to keep his eyes off one Percy Jackson, who might be just as big after a couple of movies; we think he could be.
