WWWW – What We Watched on the Weekend

Let’s face it, we’re very lucky here, we get paid to know minute details about movies and television shows. So you’d think that the last thing we’d want to do over the weekend to have a bit of ‘down time’ would be to watch anything. After all, what’s the last thing a chef wants to do after a long shift? Cook!

But we can’t help ourselves. Even when we’re not at work, we are still ‘working’ so that we can share with you what we’ve seen over the weekend. Aren’t we a dedicated crew?

Have you heard of a show called The Big Bang Theory? I was ordered to watch Season One by my friends who are sick of me asking them what their Big Bang-related jokes mean. And I have to admit, it really is a gem of a comedy!

As a self-confessed Buffy nerd, watching these geeks in motion is really only one small deviation away from my own life. Instead of worshipping a Slayer, these physicists worship everything from comic books to shows like Star Trek.

Jim Parsons as Sheldon is so convincing that you’re constantly expecting his head to pop right off from the overload of brain activity. Most importantly, The Big Bang Theory is actually funny as it depicts four extremely intelligent human beings who can, at times, only be described as socially inept.

Any pop-culture lover understands that we can’t survive on a diet of apple and spice and all things nice 100 per cent of the time. So, for a change of pace we had another look at Changeling from last year.

Angelina Jolie in Changeling

Angelina Jolie in Changeling

It’s easy to forget just how good this film is. Angelina Jolie is mesmerising as a mother frantically searching for her lost son Walter. At times, you forget that there are other actors in the film. Regardless of whether you have a paternal or maternal bone in your body, Changeling forces you to feel the pain of losing a child.

More frustrating still is the experience of watching a mother hit brick wall after brick wall as she looks towards the LAPD to act as her beacon of hope. Unsurprisingly, the LAPD is more interested in cover-ups and positive publicity than finding Walter.

Be warned, Changeling is not the kind of film to watch when in a terribly bad mood because it just might push you over the edge. However, if you’re looking for a movie that explores just how much the world has changed since the late 1920s (would you leave your child at home alone while you went to work? We think not.), then go right ahead.

One thing’s for sure, you will be left remembering the painful cry Jolie repeatedly makes for ‘Walter!’ Go on, watch it, you know you want to prove me wrong.
